Work in Progress: Dear Mr. Claus Christmas Quilt Top

June 27, 2013 by Angie

With my first quilt finished, I got right to work on my next project. It’s a Christmas quilt using 42 charm pack squares and sashing. I used this tutorial as a guide but added one more square per row to use up the entire charm pack and get a bigger quilt.

Unfortunately, I was so excited to get started that I didn’t think to be sure I had a reliable 1/4 inch seam on my new machine. This was my first time using this machine to piece. It wasn’t until after I sewed all the charm squares to sashing strips and then together to build the horizontal rows that I could tell things were not going to line up perfectly due to my seams being off.

I had come too far at that point so I kept going and finished the quilt top. Here it is on my wavy, unmade bed before squaring it up.

squared up

Here it is squared up. I had to sacrifice some fabric to get everything square.

It’s…quirky but I still like it. I don’t think the misaligned squares will be terribly noticeable once it’s a finished quilt. I probably shouldn’t have told you and maybe you wouldn’t have noticed!

ready to apply the borders

After squaring it up, I applied top and bottom then left and right borders. I realize it’s kinda backwards but I think it looks just as good either way – top and bottom borders first or second. Here it is below.

I used an entire charm pack called Dear Mr. Claus by Cosmo Cricket for Moda. I used Bella Solids in Snow for the sashing and borders.  Now to square up the quilt top and get on with my least favorite part of the quilt process: basting. I have more Christmas projects in the works including placemats, a table runner, and some pillows (hopefully).
